Firecracker Flatbread

If your parrot has a taste for spicy things, this is the perfect recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp. coconut oil (or olive oil)
  • 1/2 tbsp. dried crushed peppers
  • 1/2 tbsp. flax and/or sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup diced fresh peppers
  • Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 350′ F.
    2. Use a food processor to pulse the rolled oats into a flour consistency and put into a medium bowl. Whisk in the wheat flour.
    3. To the flour, add in extras like dried crushed peppers, seeds, and diced fresh peppers. Try fresh jalapenos, bell peppers, or red and green chilis.
    4. Pour into the mix the warm water and oil (if using coconut oil, make sure it is liquid, not solid). Knead together, dough will be slightly sticky.
    5. Place the dough on a lined cookie sheet, and cover with a large sheet of waxed paper. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough out very, very thinly. You can pre-score the dough into squares or rectangles, or break into bits after cooking.
    6. Bake for 15-20 minutes. For better crispness, move the flatbread to a cooling rack. Let cool until crispy, break and serve!

Remember! When cooking with peppers, remember to wash your hands thoroughly and do not touch your face or eyes to prevent irritation.

  • 1 sm crown of broccoli
  • 1/2 carrot
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 5 grape tomatoes

    1. Open a can of garbanzo beans. Drain and wash under running water.
    2. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add 1/4 cup of garbanzo beans and 1 cup dry pasta. Cook as long as indicated on pasta package, then drain and put into a mixing bowl. Place in refrigerator to chill.
    3. Wash broccoli well and cut into small chunks. Include the nutritious stem pieces as well!
    4. Wash the carrot well and grate into shreds.
    5. Wash and peel the celery. Cut into medium pieces.
    6. Wash tomatoes well, and cut into halves, and each half into halves or quarters. Never feed tomato stems or leaves to your birds.
    7. Remove the chilled bowl with the beans and pasta from the refrigerator. Add the rest of the ingredients. Mix well and serve.

    * For small parrots like parakeets to conures, try small pasta shapes like stars, alphabets, or small shells and elbows. For conures to macaws, use spirals or large shells and elbows.

    Edible Apple Ornaments

Decorate your parrot’s cage for the holidays with the edible apple ornaments!

    Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups flour (white or wheat)
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 apple (grated)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 350°
    2. Wash the apple and grate it into strands.
    3. In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients and mix until thoroughly combined into dough.
    4. Prepare a flat surface and sprinkle with flour to prevent the dough from sticking. Roll the dough to 1/8″ thickness.
    5. Use cookie cutters, a biscuit cutter, or just a knife to cut into squares / shapes. Press firmly.
***Optional – If you want to hang these, use a straw to punch out a circle in the top or middle of the cookie before baking! Sisal or thin leather strips work well for hanging them. (These are meant to hang in the cage or playstands, not on the Christmas tree.)
    6. Move cookies onto a foil-covered baking sheet, and bake for 20 minutes. Then, turn the oven OFF and allow cookies to rest in the hot oven for an additional 20 minutes. They will harden as they cool.
